Tahirul Qadri protest August 2016 Lahore

Lahore – Chairman of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT), Dr. Tahirul Qadri, has officially declared the launch of a nationwide anti-government movement starting August 6. The announcement came after an opposition parties’ conference held in Lahore on Sunday.

Nationwide Protests and Sit-ins Planned

Addressing the media, Dr. Qadri stated that the movement would feature protest demonstrations and symbolic sit-ins across major cities. The aim of this movement is to demand accountability from those named in the Panama Papers scandal, beginning with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his family.

He said that the protests would continue until justice is served and the “characters” behind the Panama leaks are brought to accountability. “During this movement, the Sharif brothers will find themselves confined to their homes,” Qadri claimed.

Opposition Parties Demand Transparent Accountability

The opposition conference unanimously agreed that the accountability process must start from the ruling family. The participants endorsed the Terms of Reference (TORs) previously set by opposition parties to investigate the Panama leaks.

Model Town Tragedy: Demand for Justice and Report Publication

In its joint communique, the conference also reiterated the demand for justice in the Model Town massacre. It called for the public release of the judicial commission report and legal action against those involved.

Call for Military Operation in Punjab

The opposition leaders urged the government to launch a military operation in Punjab targeting terrorist networks and implement all 20 points of the National Action Plan (NAP) in letter and spirit.

Urging Stronger Action on Kashmir

The communique also criticized the government’s “hypothetical” policy on Kashmir. It demanded an effective diplomatic strategy to highlight and stop Indian atrocities in Indian-Occupied Kashmir. The opposition urged the government to take bold steps in international forums.
