Lahore Moves Toward Smarter Urban Spaces with New Development Projects
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has greenlit two major development initiatives aimed at easing Lahore’s traffic congestion and improving the city’s public spaces.
Rs. 1.8 Billion Underground Plaza at Nasir Bagh
The centerpiece of the plan is an underground parking facility at Nasir Bagh, budgeted at Rs. 1.8 billion. The area around Nasir Bagh has long struggled with chaotic roadside parking and gridlocks, particularly during peak hours. Officials say the plaza will not only free up surface space but also play a key role in streamlining traffic flow in one of Lahore’s busiest pockets.
Tollinton Market to Get Rs. 200 Million Facelift
In addition, Tollinton Market, one of Lahore’s oldest and most popular commercial spots, will undergo a Rs. 200 million renovation. The project includes upgrades to pedestrian walkways, structural improvements, and beautification measures aimed at making the historic marketplace more visitor-friendly while supporting local traders.
What’s Next
Both projects will now be tabled before the provincial cabinet for final approval. If cleared, they are expected to not only modernize urban infrastructure but also make everyday life easier for residents and enhance Lahore’s appeal for visitors.
These initiatives fit into the provincial government’s broader push to reimagine city spaces—balancing heritage preservation with the demands of a growing urban population.
