Islamabad: Lieutenant General Raheel Sharif has been appointed as Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff (COAS) while Lt. General Rashid Mahmood as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
President Mamnoon Hussain approved the appointments upon the recommendation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif under Article 3 of the Constitution.
Prime Minister earlier today held separate meetings with the two Lt Generals.
The two Lt Generals have been have been promoted to the rank of four-star general with effect from November 28, according to a notification issued by the ministry of defense.
Prior to his appointment as the successor of General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Lt. General Raheel Sharif, the younger brother of Nishan-i-Haider recipient Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed and the nephew of Nishan-i-Haider recipient Major Aziz Bhatti, was serving as Inspector General Training and Evaluation at the General Headquarters (GHQ).
Lt. Sahrif’s prior appointments include Corps Commander Gujranwala, General Officer Commanding Lahore and Commandant of Pakistan Military Academy Kakul.
Lt. General Rashid Mahmood, who belongs to Baloch Regiment, was serving as Chief of General Staff prior to his appointment as CJCSC. He has also served as the Corps Commander of Lahore, the military secretary of President Rafiq Tariq and ISI deputy director general under General Kayani. Moreover, he has also served as the ADC of General COAS General Aslam Baig.
The change of command will be held in GHQ on November 29, the day General Kayani will retire after six years at helm.
