Justice Tasadduq Hussain Jilani on Saturday took oath as acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry administered the oath to him in a ceremony held at the Supreme Court.
The slot of CEC had fallen vacant last month after the resignation of Justice (R) Fakhruddin G. Ibrahim, who was facing severe criticism for holding early presidential elections and the alleged rigging in the May 11 general elections.
Speaking to media after taking oath, Justice Jilani promised to hold fair by-elections and said that the help of army can be taken at the sensitive polling stations.
He said that the on-duty officers will be empowered with the authority of judicial magistrate so that they can punish those who violate the rules at the spot.
