Operation against Gunman Was Delayed to Arrest Him Alive

LAHORE: Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has accepted responsibility for Friday’s stand-off in Islamabad that brought life to standstill for nearly five hours. A lone gunman accompanied by his wife and two minor children drove his black Toyota Corolla to high security zone and demanded immediate implementation of Sharia law in the country and ouster of sitting government. He was fully supported by his wife Kanwal who handed down charter of demands to negotiators.

Large number of onlookers, police personnel and media crews gathered at the scene. Different TV channels broadcasted the whole episode live for nearly five hours. Government is being criticized for its ineligibility to tackle the situation effectively as it sent very wrong message to rest of world.

Standoff came to an end when former MNA Zamurad Khan jumped on gunman Malik Sikandar to overpower him in a very risky manner. Khan luckily escaped gunshots fired by the miscreant. He was later wounded and arrested by Police commandos present at the scene.

Defending the delayed action by Government, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that this was by design as government’s intention was to arrest the man alive otherwise he may have been shot dead much earlier. He added that government did not want his wife and children to witness their husband and father squirming in pain.

Chaudhry Nisar disclosed that miscreant Malik Sikandar is an educated man with no police record at all. Law enforcement agencies are investigating the matter in details.

Chaudhry Nisar praised the role played by ex-lawmaker Zamurad Khan but said that official who provided him access to gunman will face inquiry.
