Manali: India is once again in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. South Asian country aspiring to be regional superpower and an economic hub has only succeeded in becoming “Hub of Sexual Crimes against women”. Female foreign tourists are especially vulnerable to these crimes and cases of assault of foreign tourists are reported every now and then. Due to increasing number of rape incidents India is fast being popular as “Rape Capital of the World”.
In the latest incident that took place on June 4, 2013 an American holidaymaker was assaulted by a truck driver and his two friends in north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. Accused, who cannot be identified so far offered lift in their truck to lone traveler which she accepted. They drove the truck to a deserted place and raped her for nearly an hour and abandoned her. Incident took place near a town called Manali which is a famous tourist terminus in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Sources in Police department has confirmed the incident.
“The 30-year-old was raped by men in a truck on Monday night. They offered her a lift and she accepted it,” said a police official.
Medico legal examination of the victim has also confirmed that she was raped by at least three person.
Kumar said every truck driver in Manali had been ordered to report to the local police station as part of the investigation. Police has started its investigations in the case and has asked all the truck drivers of Manali to report in the police station. Victim, who cannot be identified under Indian laws was could not manage to have a look at registration number of the vehicle before or after the incident.
Police has asked the victim not to leave the town as she will be required to identify the rapists in identification parade.
India is trying to curb such incidents with tougher laws but has achieved very little success so far. Indian Parliament recently passed laws to revise the punishments for sex reprobates. Revised laws allows capital punishment if victim dies and a least 20-year imprisonment in gang-rape cases.
In another incident which occurred over the weekend, a 21-year-old Irish aid worker was brutally raped in Kolkata by a local business man.
